Be a Tourist in Your Own Town This Summer

There's something funny that happens when you live in a place that other people dream of visiting.

We become so used to what's around us that we stop seeing it.

Every summer, thousands of visitors come to the Berkshires with maps, itineraries, and excitement. They spend months planning trips to visit museums, hike our trails, enjoy outdoor concerts, browse local shops, and eat at restaurants we've been meaning to try "someday."

Meanwhile, many of us drive past those same places every day, thinking, I'll get there eventually.

I've lived here for more than 25 years, and I realized there are still places I've never visited. Isn't that amazing?

So this summer I'm giving myself a fun little challenge: I'm going to pretend I'm a tourist in my own hometown.

I'm making a list of places I've always wanted to explore, whether it's a hidden hiking trail, a small café, a historic site, an art exhibit, a farmers market, or a scenic overlook I've somehow never stopped to enjoy. Instead of waiting for a vacation, I'm creating little adventures right here at home.

The best part? You don't need an entire week off from work.

Sometimes all it takes is an hour after dinner, a Saturday morning, or an afternoon with a friend. Those small experiences give us something to look forward to, create wonderful memories, and make summer feel longer and more meaningful.

We often think adventure requires a plane ticket or a long drive. But sometimes it's waiting just five miles from your front door.

So here's my challenge for you:

Make your own "Tourist in My Own Town" list. Write down 10 places you've never been or haven't visited in years. Then pick one each week for the rest of the summer.

You may discover a new favorite restaurant, a peaceful walking trail, a charming local shop, or simply a new appreciation for the place you've called home all along.

Sometimes the best getaway isn't getting away at all.

It's seeing your everyday surroundings with fresh eyes.

I would love to hear about your list !

If you’re not into being amidst the summer crowds here, you can always start your list “ Post Tourist” season. Your local businesses would love to see you come in when they are in their quieter season as it helps them endure the slower months.

Enjoy! :)
